Job Description

LECTURER, BIOLOGICAL INSTRUMENTATION AND MEASUREMENT, Biological Engineering (BE), to teach and help design the curriculum for the undergraduate Biological Instrumentation and Measurement (20.309) course, an extreme adventure in the theory and practice of cutting-edge imaging and measurement methods in biological research. It is an engineering subject, taught in a quantitative style, that melds core concepts of engineering and life science. The course equips students with practical skills and robust theoretical understanding that enables them to harness the increasingly sophisticated measurement techniques essential for breakthroughs in life science and explores the connection between theoretical models and real-world results. Will teach basic wet lab skills and help students assemble a fluorescence microscope from optical components, draw Bode plots, implement op-amp circuits on a breadboard, fabricate a PDMS microfluidic device, and debug simple code. Responsibilities include teaching and curriculum development; overseeing the design and development of instructional content; helping students understand the theory and practice of cutting-edge biological, optical, and electronic measurement and modeling techniques; building a fluorescence microscope; streaking a culture plate; debugging an op-amp circuit; explaining Bode plots or fabricating a microfluidic device; and performing other tasks.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: M.S. (Ph.D. preferred) in biological engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or physics that included experience in bioinstrumentation; at least two years' experience in an academic environment; practical experience with optics and electronics; strong theoretical background in linear systems and optics; experience with biological laboratory techniques; excellent computer, writing, oral communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, strategic-planning, and organizational skills; ability to work as part of a team and interact effectively with faculty/students/staff; teaching experience; and supervisory experience, specifically with students.
