Position Description:
The Harvard Medical School (HMS) Curriculum Fellows Program (CFP) is seeking an innovative, collaborative early-career science educator to act as the Curriculum Fellow (CF) in Developmental and Regenerative Biology (DRB). The CFP is a postdoctoral service and training program focused on curriculum development, teaching, and educational programming in the biological and biomedical sciences. The CF is part of a larger cohort, and receives mentorship and career advising to support their development as an educator and to help them succeed in a variety of education-focused careers. The DRB CF will provide broad curricular development, academic support, and educational programming in the DRB graduate program administered by the Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology, the first cross-school department in the University. The DRB CF will work with program leadership and faculty to develop, implement, and assess educational programming and evidence-based graduate training aligned with current needs of the training landscape, and which will prepare DRB students for success in a wide range of careers. The DRB CF also partners with the DRB student leadership group to plan paracurricular activities and support student-organized academic events.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Work closely with the faculty director to develop course materials and assessments, coordinate TA activities, and manage online and in-person content for the core graduate course in DRB: Experimental Approaches to Developmental Biology
- Organize and implement DRB orientation and recruitment programming
- Provide academic support to DRB faculty to facilitate the creation of new elective courses
- Organize and participate in activities to build and foster a sense of community among the DRB graduate community across campuses (particularly Longwood and Cambridge)
- Collect and organize information on program alumni
Qualified applicants will be evaluated based on their:
- Knowledge of developmental biology that will enable them to effectively partner with faculty to design new educational resources
- Ability to work collaboratively with multiple faculty and administrative partners across different campuses to develop new courses and educational/training opportunities
- Experience applying pedagogical best practices to the classroom, including evidence-based teaching methods and technological innovations
- Oral and written communication skills and attention to detail
- Organizational and administrative skills and the ability to successfully plan and implement programs and events
- Ability to work independently to identify and implement optimal solutions to diverse problems
Fellowships are intended for early-career scientist-educators. The CF appointment is renewable annually for a maximum of three years and is non-tenure-track. Fellows are appointed as Research Fellows and typically earn promotion to the rank of Lecturer during the term of the fellowship. The ideal start date for this Curriculum Fellow is approximately Summer/Fall 2022. The current COVID-19 restrictions in place at Harvard Medical School mean this position may begin with a combination of remote and in-person work. However, fellows may be expected to work completely in person when this becomes possible. HMS and the CFP support flexible schedules, but these decisions will be made on an individual basis and will be regularly reviewed.
Basic Qualifications:
- An earned doctorate in developmental biology or related field at the time of appointment
- Experience teaching graduate or undergraduate students
