Mars Hill University is a private, four-year liberal arts institution located in the mountains of western North Carolina. POSITION/TITLE: University Counselor
LOCATION: Mars Hill, NC
SUPERVISOR: Director of Counseling Services
SCOPE: Through dynamic and innovative approaches, Student Life is a robust program that provides students with opportunities for meaningful engagement and transformation in the co-curricular context. The professional literature is very clear that quality counseling services on a campus are a key component to student retention. This position is an essential part of the investment in wellness at Mars Hill.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
· The job is sedentary in nature
· Must be able to sit for long periods while performing office and computer operations
TRAVEL/TIME REQUIREMENTS:
· 15-20 hours/week is expected; times may vary depending on client need, crisis issues, event hours, etc.
· On-call duty
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· Master’s or Doctoral degree/ABD in social work, counseling or clinical psychology, counselor education, or marriage, couples, and family counseling
· Licensed in North Carolina as a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW), licensed psychologist, licensed clinical mental health counselor (LCMHC), or licensed marriage and family therapist
· Supervisory Licensure is preferred
· Knowledge of higher education, student life, and student development theory – experience working with young adult population
· Training or experience working in a university counseling center preferred
· Ability to work well with a diverse population of students
· Ability to work congruently within the mission of the university, division and department
· Excellent communication skills required (ability to clearly express ideas and concepts orally and in writing)
· Strong commitment to the values of diversity and human compassion
· Commitment to the academic achievement and personal development of college students, including the understanding of student success initiatives such as a first-year seminar program
· Successful completion of an employment and/or criminal history background check required
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
· Assist Director by providing short-term counseling and psychotherapy services (in-person and virtual) for currently enrolled MHU students
· As needed, consult with the Disability Services Coordinator to ensure appropriate accommodations are made available for qualifying students
· Assist with the facilitation of psychiatric health withdrawals from and re-entry to the University
· Keep up to date client (MHU student) records and maintain HIPAA and FERPA compliance
· Adhere to ethical codes as designated by state licensure
· Communicate with MHU faculty, staff, and students regarding ethical guidelines, mental health and wellness information, local resources, and advocacy initiatives
· Contribute to the assessment of student needs
· Participate in Title IX and Student Care Team work, as needed
· Contribute to the organization and planning for multiple outreach and education events per year
· Utilize avenues for communicating resources and processes with students, including the use of the web and via Lion’s ROAR (new student orientation)
· Contribute to the mental health training for staff, faculty, and administration on recognizing high risk students and various mental health concerns
· Contribute to the student mental health training on a regular basis in the classroom, residence hall, or guest presenter format
· Implement assessment strategies for student and counseling service outcomes and collaborate with multiple partners across various forms of communication to ensure student wellness and success
· Serve as on-call mental health crisis respondent for campus staff and students (duty shared between counseling center staff)
· Collaborate with multiple campus partners (faculty, athletics, disability services, student engagement, dean of students, Title IX, etc.) to support students
· Utilize technological systems (LionTrax and PIVOT) to track interventions, as appropriate
· Attend monthly Student Life divisional meetings (as able)
· Adhere to guidelines in the University Personnel & Safety Handbooks and departmental policies
· Other duties as assigned
