General Statement of Duties: Plans layouts; prepares diagrammatic sketches; and installs repairs and maintains electrical systems and equipment at a journeyman level of performance in college campus buildings and plans installs operates tests repairs and maintains electronic telecommunications and HVAC equipment systems controls etc. Performs related work as required.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Plans and lies out and installs wiring electrical fixtures apparatus and control equipment (with the exception of elevator control equipment). Plans new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials, to provide access for; future maintenance to avoid unsightly/hazardous and unreliable wiring and to conform with specifications and local electrical codes.
Repairs and maintains electrical equipment such as motors, generators transformers, regulators, wiring, switches, alarm systems, and control equipment except for elevator control equipment by locating and determining the reason for malfunction through the use of testing instruments such as ammeters oscilloscopes and testing lamps. Tests electrical equipment such as generators and heater for the purpose of determining safety and efficiency.
Prepares sketches to identify the location of all wiring and equipment, or follows previously prepared diagrams and blueprints to insure that concealed wiring is installed prior to the completion of future walls, ceilings and floorings.
Observes and/ or inspects the functioning of installed equipment or systems to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation or replacement, and repairs faulty equipment or systems as required.
Inspects circuits and Wiring for specified shielding and grounding, and repairs or rewires systems in accordance With building codes and safety regulations.
Operates and maintains motors, generators, testing switchboards and power panels in good order to avoid malfunctioning. Plans the installation of, and installs electronic, telecommunications, computer networking and Wiring systems, and HVAC equipment, systems, controls, etc., to meet campus needs.
Tests equipment and systems; installs communications, computer, and HVAC controls, Wiring, pneumatics, equipment, parts, etc.
Coordinates all requests for telecommunication needs; administers and maintains the computerized telephone call accounting system; accomplishes the installation, removal, maintenance, repair, and upgrading of telecommunications equipment, to include computerized administrative procedures.
Orders parts, equipment, hardware, phones, etc.; salvages and returns to inventory parts from outdated equipment to maintain inventory.
Provides cost estimates before purchase of materials required for agency systems.
Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as testing and charging storage batteries; reads electric meters and records meter readings; cleans and lubricates electrical machinery and equipment; maintains an inventory of parts and equipment, etc.
Supervises other department electricians and some department trades workers.
Other duties as assigned
Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Journeyman or Master Electrician's License.
Knowledge of the principles, theories, and practices, and ability to perform duties in related electronics, telecommunications, HVAC control systems, and a variety of computer software.
Knowledge of procedures and techniques, and ability to perform duties to test, calibrate, and adjust equipment.
Knowledge of the terminology, codes, symbols, software, materials, equipment, etc., used in electronics, telecommunications, and HVAC.
Knowledge of the types, and ability to use hand held tools, measuring devices, meters, calibration equipment, computers, etc.
Ability to understand and apply laws, regulations, procedures, guidelines, and policies governing unit activities.
Ability to exercise sound judgment, work independently, and communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, and to stand for long periods of time.
Ability to deal tactfully with others, and establish and maintain harmonious relationships with others.
Must be able to satisfactorily pass a check conducted by the Criminal History Systems Board (CORI) as well as a completed background check satisfactory to the university.
Ability to perform above duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
License and/or Certification Requirements: Current and valid Massachusetts Journeyman or Master Electrician's License.
