About the Opportunity: The Bouve College of Health Sciences seeks an Assistant Director for Space Planning & Safety to join their team!
Bouve College of Health Sciences is comprised of four preeminent schools of study encompassing approximately 1,000 faculty and staff, 5,000 students, and 40,000 alumni.
Please note: The primary work location for this position is the Boston MA Northeastern University Campus Location. Until our full return to campus, which is still to-be-determined, this interview process will be conducted remotely- including virtual interviews, remote onboarding and remote work. Local, on-campus work will be required once the College and this role return to an operational status that supports it.
Responsibilities: Reporting directly to the Director of Administration and Finance The Assistant Director for Space Planning & Safety will work with Bouve College of Health Sciences and University administrators to provide planning, guidance and implementation of best practices and policies related to Lab and Lab Classroom, Research and Administrative space needs, and Clinical Compliance operations.
Major Safety areas of safety responsibility include: The Assistant Director's primary role is to establish the internal management, accountability, and communication structures to implement and track environmental and safety requirements, status, and related risks associated with Health Science teaching and research activities. The Assistant Director will rely upon the support and guidance of the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) in implementing these responsibilities. The principal duties associated with this position are as follows:
Know, understand, and monitor risks, risk mitigation strategies, and environmental and safety requirements for the Bouve College of Health Sciences.
Review protocols used in teaching and research laboratories from a safety and environmental risk perspective.
Establish mechanisms to implement and monitor compliance requirements.
Oversee all PPE related issues involved in procuring, organizing, and delivering throughout the College.
Oversee implementation of required clinical student fit testing for respirators.
Ensure that personnel and students participate in required medical surveillance training.
Take appropriate action to halt any conditions that may result in imminent hazard to persons, property, or the environment.
Assist with commissioning and decommissioning research laboratories.
Assist EH&S with laboratory audits, accident investigation, maintenance of compliance records, fume hood and biosafety cabinet inspection and maintenance, safe autoclave use, and laboratory waste management.
Assist faculty with maintaining up-to-date hazardous material and equipment inventories, maintaining applicable safety data sheets, and maintaining spill response and first aid supplies.
Assist college administrators and EH&S with identifying and procuring appropriate personal protective equipment for use in teaching labs, research labs, and clinical internship locations.
Represent the college on appropriate safety committees and participate in the development of strategies, policies, and procedures for environmental and safety compliance management in Bouve College.
Monitor and report on the college's environmental and safety program status, trends, and risks.
Notify the college administrators of unresolved compliance issues and situations involving potential safety hazards, exposures, accidents, injuries, illnesses, spills, releases or other regulatory or environmental issues and seek resolution in correcting identified issues.
Seek EH&S guidance in implementing corrective actions as needed; facilitate and promote the exchange of information within Bouve College and with EH&S in the interest of collaborative problem solving and program improvement.
Participate, as needed, with the Northeastern Emergency Response Team to assist with the response to laboratory accidents and hazardous material releases should they occur within the Bouve College.
The Assistant Director position requires a background in and broad knowledge of teaching and research laboratory equipment and processes with preferred experience pertaining to the safety requirements associated with clinical and health science activities as well as safety requirements associated with chemical, biological, radiological, and preferably, pharmaceutical work. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, technically skilled, and able to effectively influence safety performance, execute change, and promote collaborative problem solving.
Major Space areas of space responsibility include:
Develop and maintain the College's space inventory and allocation data, including usage (e.g. office, research, instructional, administrative support) and optimization metrics. Work effectively with the Dean's Office, administrators, facilities personnel, faculty, staff, and students during the design and implementation phase of renovation projects to understand user needs and assure satisfactory results.
Manage inventory of supplies needs for all clinical classrooms and placements.
In coordination with the purchasing office work to secure supplies needed for the efficient operation of the clinical locations
Qualifications: Master's degree from an accredited institution in one of the physical sciences, life sciences, applied health science, or other applicable degree required. Minimum of 5-7 years of demonstrated experience incorporating applicable federal, state, and local regulatory requirements and best management practices into laboratory operations. Demonstrated knowledge of hazardous material storage, use, and waste principles. Familiarity with laboratory protocols using radioactive materials, radiation producing equipment, and biological materials. Preferred experience with reviewing research protocols involving human subjects and pharmaceuticals. Demonstrated knowledge of common processes, equipment, and hazardous material properties found in a laboratory setting. General awareness of process safety requirements in a laboratory setting. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), interpersonal skills, and emotional acuity are required and necessary to effectively promote a culture of safety throughout Bouve College.
Ability to present safety concepts as well as effectively negotiate and appropriately influence the safety behavior of teaching and research faculty, lab workers, students and others engaged in high-risk activities.
Proficient at standard computer software packages including Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Outlook in performing work assignments. Experience with or ability to learn and utilize a Learning Management System (LMS) such as BlackBoard, Canvas, or other data management platform such as BioRaft, to track safety training and other safety program management needs. Excellent time and project management skills, including planning, prioritizing, and scheduling multiple ongoing projects including the ability to collaborate effectively. Be medically qualified to wear respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment as well as lift to 50 lbs. Work in a variety of physical environments where hazardous materials or equipment are in storage or use.
