The Institute for Systems Engineering Research is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center and Mississippi State University. The goal of ISER's efforts and products is to mitigate risk, reduce cost and improve efficiency in Department of Defense (DoD) acquisition programs, serve as an additional asset for the state's industrial base for systems engineering related tasks, and create an environment that draws DoD and civilian industry development to the state of Mississippi.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform engineering research and data analysis.
This position will have a strong emphasis on computational science, mathematics, and engineering research as related to systems engineering and its applications. Specially, knowledge of transportation and logistic processes, managing "big data", simulations and model building, data analysis and trade space processes.
Provide expertise in one or more of the areas of application and associated technologies listed above.
Initiate research and data analysis in simulations for systems engineering. Other areas of interest include product life cycle costs, risk, reliability and resilience applications of systems engineering.
Tasks include developing and executing desktop and high performance computing codes for a variety of military and civilian applications. Supporting tasks associated with systems engineering research.
Develop and enhance relationships with federal, state, local and private partners to the fullest extent possible, forming collaboration and coordinating relationships resulting in research and development activities.
Publish the results of personal and sponsored research in archival journals referred by his/her peers.
Personnel appointed to these positions should: (a) be involved in research engineering support (b) hold a bachelor's degree in engineering or computer science and (c) meet specific criteria developed by the organizational unit where the person is located.
Research Engineer I - B.S. in engineering or computer science; Less than one year in a related area.
Research Engineer II - B.S. in engineering or computer science; Two years of professional experience in a related area; Requires two years at previous level or equivalent.
Research Engineer III - B.S. in engineering or computer science; Four years of professional experience in a related area; Requires two years at previous level or equivalent.
Senior Research Engineer - B.S. in engineering or computer science; Six years or more years of professional experience in a related area; Requires two years at previous level or equivalent.
Successful candidates must be able to qualify for the National Agency Check with Inquires (NACI) to gain access to ERDC and its computational infrastructure.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort:
No unusual physical requirements. Requires limited lifting of files and records and nearly all work is performed in a comfortable indoor facility.
Frequent- External imposed deadlines; set and revised beyond one's control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position; involves conflict-resolution or similar interactions involving emotional issues or stress on a regular basis.
Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
