As an organized research center within the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), CVD comprises a multi-disciplinary team of faculty and staff whose primary mission is to develop, evaluate, and implement vaccines and other interventions to reduce illness and mortality domestically and in less developed countries. The CVD is seeking a Laboratory Research Manager with expertise in Immunology to join our team.

Responsible for managing the operations of a single or multiple research laboratory(s) and provide administrative and technical support to clinical and research activities. This position is responsible for ensuring design, development, documentation and implementation of research procedures and protocols using a variety of complex activities. Contribute to the creation of a new laboratory or the expansion of existing laboratory(s).
Manage laboratory staff including training, scheduling, coordinating and delegating work, monitoring and evaluating performance to promote maximum staff member benefit and effectiveness as well as overall functional productivity.
Manage the development and execution of research studies. Revises studies, in consultation with upper management or principal investigator, to meet changing needs and requirements and enforces standards.
Manage laboratory operations including individual project budgets, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing policies and procedures, and ordering supplies. Identify and address issues and deficiencies and implement effective solutions.
May perform additional tasks as required for specific projects: participate in preparation of budgets and technical proposals, interview and help in selection of laboratory personnel, perform annual personnel evaluations, participate in teleconferences, communicate with sponsors, communicate and interact with other laboratories or groups, review protocols, standard operating procedures and manuals of procedure.
Perform other research activities required by the study(s).
May assemble and assist with literature research, editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication.
Provide for establishment or development of laboratory by evaluating equipment or machinery to be ordered, planning interactions with IT systems, and drafting Standard Operating Procedures for using new equipment.
Foster and support a conducive, collegial, productive and work-efficient environment.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree in Biology or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.
Experience: Six (6) years of experience working in a research laboratory setting that include four (4) years in the area of immunology.
Supervisory Experience: Two (2) years of direct supervision or responsibility for training, work coordination, and monitoring the work of others.
Other: May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials, and Human Research Protections trainings.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
This is a senior position to manage an immunology laboratory at the Center for Vaccine Development. Candidates must have a strong background and experience on immunological assays for the purposes of studying host immune responses. Typical methodology employed in the lab includes: ELISA, tissue-culture based and other functional antibody assays, specimen processing, specimen cryopreservation, B cell assays, cytokine measurements, cell separation, etc. The position requires strong analytical capacity and communication skills (oral and written), in addition of supervisory capacity. Thorough knowledge of position requirements. Thorough knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Ability to support a mission and strategic vision. Instructional, training, and teambuilding skills to strengthen and cultivate relationships. Skill in consultation and change management.
