The MIT Department of Architecture seeks candidates for one and potentially multiple full-time tenure track faculty positions in Architecture + Urbanism at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor. The anticipated start date is July 2021/January 2022.

The MIT Department of Architecture is committed to design, research, and scholarship at the highest level and is dedicated to a critically engaged, socially responsible, technologically advanced, and culturally engaged vision of architecture. The department offers seven degrees, both professional and applied research oriented, at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels and is organized around five discipline groups: Architecture + Urbanism (A+U), Building Technology (BT), Design and Computation (Comp), History, Theory & Criticism with the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture (HTC + AKPIA), and Art, Culture & Technology (ACT). Our faculty include architects, designers, engineers, artists, historians, urbanists, and building scientists who are committed to excellence, and collaborate extensively across the Department, School, Institute, and beyond.

Given this context, the Department of Architecture seeks outstanding candidates with a talent and ability in the production and teaching of architecture, urbanism, and design at a range of scales and contexts. Interest and capacity to work and teach within a rigorous research environment that is addressing contemporary critical, practical, and theoretical issues within the field is also expected.

Primary criteria for the position are demonstrable excellence in the field of architecture or urbanism, experience in teaching architecture and/or urban studios, and a strong promise of significant creative achievement in the field through design work, research, professional practice, or a combination thereof.

Candidates must have a defined area of interest and inquiry, and demonstrate a creative and innovative ability in teaching and practice. Candidates must also demonstrate potential to teach at the intersection of design, technology and culture through studios, workshops and/or seminars to both undergraduate and graduate students from a diversity of backgrounds. Candidates must be willing to engage across the various disciplines within the architecture department, and possibly with other centers and labs within the School of Architecture and Planning, and the Institute. Believing that such an intersection creates a charged atmosphere for study and a critical edge for research, we seek candidates with an ability to thrive within this context.

It is desired that candidates have the ability to advance our teaching and research among several broad areas of design inquiry that might include urbanism, contemporary culture & theory; computational methodologies; climate change and sustainability; design, technology & media; and material processes and fabrication. We seek candidates with the character and energy to participate in the intellectual life of the department, readiness to teach both graduate and undergraduate studios, and an ability to add new dimensions to our intellectual activities. Faculty responsibilities include teaching, academic and thesis advising research, and participation in department committees and governance.

Qualifications

A professional degree in architecture and/or urban design (MArch or MAUD preferred, BArch considered) is required and a minimum of two to three years of teaching experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level is preferred. Candidates must have a body of projects, structures or installations, and /or research work that show promise and significance to the field of Architecture + Urbanism.
