The North Shore Community College (NSCC) TRIO Upward Bound (UB) Program is a federally funded program for low-income, first-generation, and/or academically at-risk high school students. The primary mission is to increase the rate at which participants complete their secondary school education, and enroll in and graduate from institutions of post-secondary education. The UB program provides academic, co- and extra-curricular activities during the academic year and the summer, including instruction, tutoring, college tours, cultural events, health and fitness activities, educational workshops, and service activities.
ABOUT UB SUMMER ACADEMY:
The UB Summer Academy is a six-week program that simulates commuter and residential college experiences. The Summer Academy serves approximately 46 students in the Lynn Public Schools. This year's Summer Academy includes a three-week day program at North Shore Community College's Lynn Campus and a three-week residential component at UMass Amherst. The program runs Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm during the non-residential component and Saturday, July 111th - Saturday August 1st during the residential component. The overarching theme for this year's Summer Academy is In It to Win It.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Summer Assistants assist the Program and Academic Coordinators and the Program Secretary with organizational clerical works and managing students.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide clerical support as needed for the Upward Bound staff, including but not limited to: making copies, taking attendance, answering phones
Prepare and set up materials as needed
Assist with monitoring daily attendance and departure of program participants
Shared responsibility for dormitory supervision of project participants during the residential component
Assist in meal checks and monitoring students in the dining hall
Perform Bell Desk duties as assigned (student/equipment check-in, supply room inventory/maintain supply room)
Assist with classroom and residence hall clean-up during and at the end of the program
Assist with editing, organizing, and designing: Summer Academy Yearbook and T-shirt contest
Participate in one-on-one and group staff, student, and all-program meetings
Build and maintain a positive, supportive, productive, and safe environment for both students and staff
Appropriately represent NSCC and UB at all events
Other duties as assigned.
SALARY: Total earnings for this position is $1,593.75 at $12.75 hour plus room and board and transportation to/from during the residential portion of the program.
June 23 and June 24: Staff training and prep at NSCC's Lynn Campus
June 25 - July 10 (off July 3): Day Program meets at NSCC's Lynn Campus
Saturday, July 11 & Sunday July, 12 - 2-day training program at UMass Amherst
Sunday, July 12- August 1: 3-week residential program at UMass Amherst

Must be at least 18 years old at the start of the program
Clerical experience in a customer service setting preferred
Demonstrates a high degree of creativity, energy, and enthusiasm
Strong interpersonal communication skills
Knowledge of/experience with the Upward Bound program. Preference is given to alumni, and in particular, alumni who actively participate in their senior year
Demonstrated ability to be punctual and dependable
Demonstrated ability to act as a team player
Demonstrated ability to maintain professional boundaries and uphold program policies
Must be able to participate in physical activities such as outdoor team sports/events, standing, sitting, walking to and from classes and the dining hall and on college tours, field trips
Demonstrated ability to move class supplies and recreational equipment as needed, equipment weighing up to 50 pounds across campus for various classroom and event needs
Documented CPR and/or First Aid certification preferred
Bi-lingual (Spanish, French, Khmer) preferred
Demonstrated sensitivity towards and passion and commitment to working with students and staff of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, different levels of academic preparation, or/and varying physical and learning abilities-prior experience preferred
Candidates will be required to pass a CORI/SORI and/or a National background check as a condition of employment.
