Berklee College of Music invites applications for the position of Chair of the Contemporary Writing and Production Department. This is a 12-month administrative position with a renewable contract. Reporting to the Dean of the Professional Writing and Music Technology Division, the chair manages all aspects of the academic, budgetary, and administrative leadership of the department.
Located in Boston, Massachusetts, Berklee College of Music is the world's largest independent music college and the premier institution for the study of contemporary music. The Contemporary Writing and Production Department comprises an assistant chair and a faculty of 29 teachers. The department provides core music instruction in music writing and arranging for all Berklee students. In addition, the department provides instruction in the Contemporary Writing and Production concentrate to approximately 490 students who have declared the CWP major. The student majoring in CWP studies writing, arranging, scoring, and production, and learns to apply these skills and concepts by writing for and overseeing the production of a wide variety of acoustic, electronic, and hybrid ensembles, ranging from small groups to orchestra in both recorded and live performance situations. The student also learns about the role of the professional writer in today's music industry, developing the skills and knowledge to function effectively as writer, arranger, and producer under a wide variety of conditions and music industry environments.
Administrative duties include: student advising in both the CWP major and in core arranging classes; curriculum review, development, and oversight; and faculty management, including classroom observations, faculty development, mentoring, consultation, and evaluation. The chair also supervises the assistant chair and performs other administrative tasks as assigned by the dean.
Leadership in curriculum development and management of both core music classes and courses in the CWP major as they grow and evolve to reflect the dynamic state of the music industry.
The chair develops and reports on departmental goals and objectives.
In collaboration with the assistant chair and departmental faculty, the chair produces department concerts and directs other department activities.
The chair and assistant chair collaborate with other chairs in the division and college in a variety of initiatives, including the placement of entering students in core music classes.
The chair serves on departmental, divisional, and college committees as needed.
It is expected that the chair will maintain professional music participation outside of the college.
The chair works with other leaders at the college to realize Berklee's vision and mission, and to collaborate - at the college, division, and department levels - in achieving the institution's goals and objectives.
Significant past and current experience as an active composer, arranger, conductor, and/or producer in a variety of contemporary music styles
Experience in writing and arranging for small, medium, and large ensembles
High-level skills and experience using music technology in music production
Substantial teaching experience
Administrative experience in either education or the music industry
An advanced degree in music or equivalent professional experience
Experience in music curriculum development
A strong interest in working in a diverse workplace with a multicultural student population
A commitment to continued personal growth as both an artist and an academic leader
Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including the ability to establish and maintain relationships with other academic areas within the college, music industry constituencies, and external academic institutions
