About the Opportunity: The Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences at Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts invites applications from qualified candidates for a full-time, non-tenure track faculty position, which includes service as the director of our growing MS in Environmental Science and Policy (ESP) program.Primary responsibilities include taking on responsibility for the implementation and growth of the ESP program and teaching courses that serve both our undergraduate majors and the ESP and other graduate programs. We seek broadly trained candidates with expertise in areas such as natural resource management, sustainability sciences, conservation biology, environmental/land use planning, environmental water quality/restoration, or related fields. Candidates who can leverage their prior experience with government, industry or non-profit organizations to enhance experiential learning opportunities for students are strongly encouraged to apply. Given the diversity of our curriculum, we seek candidates that can offer both day and evening courses.
The Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences is strongly interdisciplinary, and administers programs in the College of Science at Northeastern University in Environmental and Sustainability Sciences, Environmental Studies, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, and Marine Biology. The Department also contributes to the curriculum for undergraduates majoring in Biology. Northeastern University occupies a vibrant 67-acre campus in the heart of Boston, surrounded by other leading educational, health care, technological, and research institutions, as well as world-renowned venues for art and music (see cos.northeastern.edu/mes). The Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences also operates the Nahant Campus, which serves as the location for the Coastal Sustainability Institute and the Marine Science Center.
Responsibilities: In addition to heading the MS in ESP program, the Assistant/Associate Teaching Professor will be the instructor of record for 4 courses that are either part of the current curriculum or are new courses developed by the candidate to serve the needs of a rapidly evolving academic program. The Department Chair, Associate Chair, Graduate Program Director and/or Faculty Head of the program will work with the candidate to identify new course needs. The Assistant/Associate Teaching Professor may be offered one course release per academic year to facilitate additional service requirements to the department. Service requirements may be assigned at the discretion of the Chair of the Department of Marine and Environmental Sciences and may include but are not limited to academic advising, program development, curriculum development, and committee appointments.
Responsibilities include overseeing the ESP program, which includes student recruitment that focuses across a broad swath of demographic groups; working with the ESP Advisory Board on student admissions; ensuring students are on track to complete their degree; facilitating co-op opportunities for students; and fostering a robust, diverse, and inclusive graduate program. In addition to the responsibilities associated with this director position the position will also require the design of syllabi, identifying course resources, critically reading and grading written assignments, holding office hours, and determining and submitting grades. The Department Chair and Associate Chair may also identify other responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications: Applicants must have a Ph.D. in the environmental/sustainability sciences or another closely related discipline prior to the start of the appointment, experience teaching undergraduate and graduate lecture courses, and excellent communication, collaboration and leadership skills. The candidate must have excellent communication skills, both written and oral and the leadership skills to manage and grow the MS in ESP program.
