The Equipment Distribution Center (EDC) serves the students, faculty, and staff of Emerson College by vending media production equipment and support services for curricular use.
The mission of the EDC is to ensure that its customers have timely access to production equipment in good working order and to provide high-quality technical and operational services in support of their curricular projects.
The primary responsibility of the EDC Manager is to ensure the overall successful operation of the EDC. The EDC Manager directly supervises the Operations Manager, Evening Operations Manager, and Film Operations Manager, and indirectly supervises the Evening Operations Supervisor and the Quality Control Supervisor. The EDC Manager provides strategic insight and vision for the operation and is also an expert operational resource for customers and staff, supporting technical questions and concerns.
Employee supervision includes direct work assignments based on manager's independent judgment and the interest of the employer. Management of performance includes discipline and formal performance evaluations that directly affect the employee's pay raises and/or job security. The EDC Manager will be directly evaluated, in part, based on performance as a supervisor.
The position shares responsibility for the training and supervision of up to 60 student employees.
Oversight of the daily operation of the entire EDC. Duties may include the scheduling of field equipment, ensuring all components are present and in good working order, and generation of repair tickets. Additionally, the EDC Manager will, at times, perform equipment checkouts from start to finish with student customers, including retrieval of equipment from storage area and walk through of equipment setup and operation. Duties may involve the moving and lifting of heavy objects.
Semi-annually, review and revise the EDC's Policies and Procedures manual. Conduct student Equipment and Facilities Use Contract sessions at the beginning of each semester.
Stay current with industry trends by attending local vendor presentations and demonstrations, industry conference wrap-ups, on-site vendor demonstrations, and reading industry literature.
Oversee the quality control process, managed by the Operations Manager and QC Supervisor, to ensure that all damaged equipment is fixed or replaced in a timely manner.
Work with senior MTP management to develop strategic initiatives to improve and enhance EDC operations based on usage and industry trends as well as user and staff feedback. Develop, implement, and refine best practices, workflows and efficiencies.
Oversee and manage the collection of fines for lost, damaged or stolen equipment. Maintain database to reflect these transactions and provide regular reporting to senior MTP management. Additionally, oversee the replacement of lost, stolen, and broken components of all kits in the EDC. Manage a database and inventory of spare components and replacements.
Directly supervise the Operations Manager, Evening Operations Manager, and Film Operations Manager, and indirectly supervise the Evening Operations Supervisor and the Quality Control Supervisor. In collaboration with Visual and Media Arts, the Journalism department, the EDC staff, and other MTP departments, evaluate and recommend new equipment purchase initiatives.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. 5-7 years experience related to career discipline of which 2-4 is prior management experience.
Knowledge of and expertise with various types of film and video equipment. Focus includes but is not limited to: film cameras, digital cinema cameras, DSLRs, ENG/EFP cameras, and lighting and grip equipment.
Experience at an educational or private equipment rental or repair facility.
Must be a strategic thinker and detail-oriented self-starter with ability to work in a complex, high demand, and fast paced academic environment. Must have strong interpersonal, customer service, and written and verbal communication skills. Applicant will be expected to provide a writing sample.
WebCheckout or similar equipment scheduling and ticketing software, basic equipment troubleshooting or repair, record of customer service excellence.
Strong familiarity of G Suite applications and Microsoft Office, particularly Google Sheets or Excel.
10 years film and/or television production experience. Supervisory experience in a rental or repair facility. Supervision of a multi-layered team.
Proven ability to provide strategic direction for an operational area.
Operations experience in an educational or private equipment rental or repair facility.
Supervision of at least one full-time employee.
