Research Support - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Research Assistant II/III to join the Marine Chemistry & Geochemistry Department. This is a regular, half-time, non-exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.
The position will involve a wide range of duties performed mostly in the context of a geochemistry lab focused on analysis of nitrogen and oxygen stable isotopes in marine systems.
Responsible for day-to-day laboratory management including ordering of chemicals, gases, spare parts and supplies, maintaining lab equipment for regular operation, assisting scientific staff, students and postdocs with laboratory analyses and overseeing lab organization, hygiene and safety.
Maintaining microbial cultures, keeping a sample database, preparing samples for isotopic analysis, basic wet chemistry assays, servicing vacuum pump systems, as well as operating, tuning, maintaining, and troubleshooting two isotope ratio mass spectrometers (IsoPrime 100).
While sea duty is not required, opportunities for field work, including going to sea, could arise.

DESIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree and/or experience in a related field such as marine chemistry, geology, geochemistry, microbiology or analytical chemistry.
Hands-on experience with analytical instrumentation and approaches, including gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, spectroscopy or mass spectrometry, is preferred but not required.
Exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills are required to work with a diverse group of researchers, research topics, students, and postdocs.
Visual abilities to include near, far, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to distinguish basic colors. Other physical tasks include occasional prolonged standing/walking and use of hands for basic grasping and manipulation. Other occupational requirements include working around others, with others and independently. Will be exposed to odorous chemicals or specimens and hazardous substances or specimens. Physical duties are subject to change.
