The candidate will join the dynamic department faculty with extramurally funded programs in infectious disease, epidemiology, wildlife health, public health, production and companion animal health, One Health, and genetics. The department is home to over 50 faculty members.
The successful candidate will be in residence at the NYS Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and Animal Health Diagnostic Center (AHDC), located in Ithaca, NY, and will be a member of the academic faculty of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University. The AHDC is a full-service, multidisciplinary animal-disease diagnostic laboratory in the State of New York. It is dedicated to improving animal health and preventing infectious diseases or conditions that might have impact on animal and human health.
Duties and Responsibilities: The primary responsibility of the position is to oversee the activities of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory (MDL) of the AHDC. This includes providing leadership and vision to meet the current demands on the MDL as well as determining future directions needed to keep the laboratory on the leading edge of molecular diagnostics. The Director will work collaboratively with colleagues within the AHDC, College, and University to develop, validate, and implement new testing methods, technologies, reagents or protocols according to the AAVLD standards. The Director will oversee personnel and budget matters within the MDL; seek opportunities to expand MDL testing services for internal and external clients; ensure adherence of the MDL to all applicable Quality System protocols and procedures, test performance, and turnaround time standards; and maintain all necessary training and certifications for the MDL. The successful candidate will also be expected to establish and/or maintain an innovative, extramurally funded research program and a track record of scholarly activity, actively participate in the AAVLD and similar organizations involved in diagnostic sciences, and participate in the teaching for DVM and graduate curricula.
Qualifications include: Ph.D. in Molecular Biology or related field, or a DVM or equivalent degree; minimum of 5 years of post-Ph.D. experience in infectious animal diseases and animal disease diagnostics and training; and experience in advanced molecular methods and technologies. Methods development and test validation is one focus of this position. A minimum of 3 years of progressively increasing management and supervisory training and experience, including personnel and budget management, is needed.
