Performs basic or applied research of a limited scope, primarily using existing theories and methods. Assists the supervisor in the interpretation and publication of results and grants. Maintains the laboratory and may exercise functional supervision over supporting research staff. Primary responsibility is ensuring that the research is complete. The appointment generally does not extend beyond two years.
Must have a Ph.D. or equivalent; be able to undertake substantially full-time research or scholarship; work under the supervision of a senior scholar.
Proven, strong record in growing and studying difficult to cultivate environmental microorganisms from a diversity of enviornments, including oxic, anoxic and extreme habitats; experience with basic molecular biology techniques and next generation sequencing analyses. The successful candidate will
Work with aerobic and anaerobic microbes and samples.
Handle environmental sediment and groundwater samples
Routinely culture, enrich and isolate diverse bacteria under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, and in different growth formats including columns, flasks and bottles and in micro-plates.
Conduct genetic manipulation of bacteria.
Sequence and assemble bacterial genomes.
Analyze sequencing data sets.
Write up research results, seek to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present results in group meetings, workshops and/or conferences.
Previous postdoctoral experience preferred.
