Rhode Island School of Design seeks an Assistant Director, CE Student Experience to join RISD Continuing Education (RISD|CE). Under the direction of the Associate Director, the Assistant Director ensures the successful student-centered environment and a positive student experience for all CE programs. This role serves as the central point of contact for students and parents in order to effectively implement a positive programmatic experience and to resolve challenges. The Assistant Director leads the planning, implementation and assessment of all CE student and graduate community-building initiatives such as orientations, programming, trips, and networking events and works alongside CE staff to ensure execution. The position also serves as a point of contact for all student behavioral and grievance concerns, and coordinates providing appropriate support and resources utilizing campus partners, as necessary. The Assistant Director oversees CE student code of conduct policies and procedures, including the updates and communication of the emergency forms, CE student handbook and other student life-related materials.
Promote an inclusive student-centered environment and serve as a resource for students, staff and faculty for student-related co-curricular matters, policies and procedures by developing, implementing and assessing student success best practices.
Develop and lead appropriate parent connections and build a strong parent community ensuring alignment with RISD programs. Serve as the primary liaison for parents, guardians, and educational advisors for the purpose of supporting pre-college programs, on-boarding new students and providing support throughout their program experience.
Supervise the CE Young Artist Program Coordinator and Young Artist Supply Coordinator. Manages the centralized Summer Office and oversees the overall on-site parent & student experience and programmatic coordination. Lead the orientation of all students across programs and ensure exceptional customer service, while following best practices.
Lead, plan, implement and assess student and graduate community-building programs and opportunities such as networking events, social media outlets, reunions, trips, and other special initiatives. Work closely with CE staff, including but not limited to, Assistant Director for Advising + Registration to ensure academic progress by leveraging insights and opportunities related to academic advising efforts. Assist in the planning of important milestone events such as graduation.
Leads, researches, creates, implements, and assesses policies and best practices for Continuing Education as it relates to risk management and minors, including the implementation of RISD's Minors on Campus Policy as it relates to Continuing Education. Documents and communicates policy or procedural changes and implementations as necessary. Is responsible for the updating of CE policies in written documentation including but not limited to handbooks, websites, etc.
Identify potential areas of concern and/or opportunities to improve the student experience. Implement interventions when necessary to ensure student success; including crisis intervention and support measures. Identifies and engages, when necessary, appropriate campus partners such as Residence Life, Disability Support, Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services and others.
Oversees CE student code of conduct policies and procedures, including the updates and communication of the emergency forms, CE student handbook and other student life-related materials.
Serves as the main on-call representative for Continuing Education population, including minors and CE residential programs, responding to student related emergencies and concerns and follow up with students (daily and crisis intervention) on personal issues and concerns. Make referrals to campus departments (CAPS, Disability Support, etc) when necessary. Lead the on-call planning and protocol expectations for CE programs and how it relates to campus partners.
Identify policies, processes, procedures that create barriers to student success and work to address and resolve those system-level issues. Assist with implementing the student retention plan and work with enrollment to set student retention goals. Align closely with the institutional SEA initiatives and assist in leading CE efforts to improve access and support across programs.
Ensure that processes and practices fully comply with appropriate legal, regulatory (federal, state and institutional) and accreditation standards (e.g., Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, Americans with Disabilities Act).
Lead the recruitment and selection, identifying and selecting eligible students for CE scholarship funds while working alongside institutional partners to carry out institutional recruitment goals. Lead the scholarship review process and incorporate best practices into this review. Continually assess the programmatic and scholarship review process to ensure alignment with RISD.
Recruit, hire, train and provide opportunities of growth for staff; Graduate Assistants, students, interns as necessary for programming efforts. Supervise interns and other staff as necessary by program. Onboard TAs and CE Education Assistants to ensure a positive experience for all students, faculty. (5%)
Work alongside the CE staff and campus partners on SEI planning and initiatives for the CE community of faculty, staff and students.
Bachelor's Degree required, Master's degree preferred, preferably in the areas of student affairs/ college student development, counseling, or education.
Three to five years' experience in an education setting, with an understanding of adolescent and college students' development theory required.
Experience in orientation program planning, strongly preferred.
At least two years of experience supervising students and/or staff
2 years of experience in residential on-call crisis response required.
Passion for and experience working with diverse populations of students and faculty. Demonstrated cultural competence with an understanding of inclusion and diversity issues in an academic setting.
Ability to use discretion and handle sensitive matters. Diplomacy, confidentiality and strong interpersonal skills, required.
Experience in handling sensitive situations using tact, diplomacy and best practices for both minors and adults. Ability to serve in an on-call capacity, including nights and weekends, especially in the summer months.
Strong interpersonal, communication, presentation and listening skills with a demonstrated ability to display diplomacy and tact. Ability to be clear, fluent, and concise. Visual Arts background, preferred.MS Word proficient.
Experience with Photoshop and knowledge of Adobe CS5, preferred.
Knowledge of FileMaker Pro and Slate preferred.
35 hours per week, 12 months per year
