The Director, Data Science IT Services will ensure a vibrant collaborative and technical environment that will enable and advance data science research across HMS. Creating and overseeing a new central Data Science Service for HMS IT, the successful candidate will be responsible for implementing and managing data science consultation, software, and infrastructure - particularly developing cloud environment implementations, managing and enabling access to research data assets for HMS investigators, training and support for users across HMS, tracking metrics, and participating in data science-based research and collaborations as an affiliated scientist in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at HMS. The successful candidate will also be responsible for recruiting and managing staff to fulfill these functions, and for collaborations across Harvard University, with affiliated institutions, and with external institutions and initiatives.
The successful candidate in this position will join the Research Computing Group of Information Technology (https://rc.hms.harvard.edu/). They will work alongside other Research Computing teams that provide analogous services and tooling for the use of our high-performance computing environments and storage and the Research IT Services group that supports software applications and research data management. This person will also work closely across Information Technology, particularly with the Infrastructure and DevOps groups that manage the systems and networks that support research across HMS. They will have a research affiliation with the Department of Biomedical Informatics (http://dbmi.hms.harvard.edu/), and will be part of the newly created Blavatnik Institute Center for Computational Biomedicine.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Support Data Science-based research across HMS.
Recruit and manage data science technical support staff.
Manage research resources necessary for data science-based research.
Manage a data science training program for HMS researchers.
Manage an analytics and metrics program.
Undertake data science-based research in collaboration with HMS faculty.
Salary Grade: 060
Union: 00 - Non Union, Exempt or Temporary
An advanced degree, preferably a PhD, in a biological science relevant to HMS research with an emphasis in Data Science and/or an advanced degree in biomedical informatics with an emphasis in Data Science.
At least 10 years of relevant experience.
Evidence of ongoing productive research in data sciences and biology or biomedicine.
Familiarity with current methods, tools, and environments for Data Science, particularly cloud environments.
Experience managing and growing staff.
Ability to conceptually bridge between research needs and technical solutions.
Ability to work collaboratively in a complex and rapidly moving profession with a broad array of stakeholders.
Ability to clearly communicate, in written and oral form, to faculty, administrative, and general audiences.
Self-starter who can independently build and grow a Data Science service practice.
Ability to integrate technical details in the context of the larger strategic mission.
