The Boston University Police Department is currently seeking candidates for the position of shift Lieutenant. The primary responsibility of the Lieutenant is to ensure the proper performance of police duties from officers and sergeants assigned to his/her supervision. The Lieutenant may be required to act in place of the patrol commander in their absence. The Lieutenant may be assigned to other highly technical or specialized assignments within the department that requires such skill or expertise. He/She is charged with insuring the department's rules, regulations, and policies are adhered to in a professional manner while adhering to our mission of community policing. The Lieutenant is also responsible for discipline, training, officer proficiency, and duties of all personnel under their command
The Lieutenant may be required work additional hours and shifts if determined by BUPD commanders. They review the performance of civilians, officers and supervisors regularly and determines if they are properly, effectively, and consistently carrying out their assigned duties. Takes appropriate corrective action if necessary. They develop training programs to educate department personnel on various law enforcement updates, issues and trends. If necessary make recommendations to improve the employee's knowledge, abilities and skill set in order to meet the needs of the Boston University community as well as local and state regulations and standards. The shift lieutenant should be able to coordinates functions within the department's other divisions, such criminal investigations, where such coordination would be required to successfully respond and follow up to reported crimes. They would also be expected to collaborate with other law enforcement entities should the need arise.
The shift lieutenant would be expected to respond to major emergencies and incidents that require the presence of a commanding officer. They would ensures clear and effective dispatch communication in addition to appropriate advisory communication to the university community as mandated by USDOE Clery Act.
Bachelor's degree strongly preferred, or equivalent experience in law enforcement or related field. Must be Municipally Academy trained and certified with a current License to carry a firearm. At least five (5) years of supervisory experience. (Shift Command experience strongly preferred)
