This Associate Chaplain provides expertise and oversight for the Universityâ™s multi-racial, multi-cultural Muslim community of students, faculty, staff and alumni as a member of the multi-faith professional team in Brownâ™s Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life within the Division of Campus Life. This is a full time position.
This Associate Chaplain oversees and supports program and resources specific to and appropriate for the Universityâ™s broadly diverse Muslim community of students, faculty, staff and alumni, including Americans and a broadly diverse international community.
This Associate Chaplain oversees program, budget, student interns and the Brown Muslim Student Center. S/he works collaboratively with all of the Chaplains, the E-Board of the Brown Muslim Student Association and student and professional colleagues across the campus. Programs beyond Jumuâ™ah Prayer include cultural and topical projects and speakers; social and community gatherings; Ramadan; regular religious instruction, guidance, pastoral care, interfaith and intercultural cooperation with campus communities to address issues of social injustice, including inequities of race, gender and religion.
The Associate Chaplain serves as needed and appropriate on committees and consultations beyond those within OCRL, including regular oversight for Brownâ™s Halal dietary options; residential accommodations; and the network of campus prayer rooms.
All Associate Chaplains must be prepared, comfortable and available to work with the full diversity of the campus community at all times, and demonstrate capacity to provide support, leadership and collaboration in times of loss or crisis.
3 to 5 years experience in higher education and/or equivalent leadership in multi-faith setting or NGO required.
Demonstrated knowledge of and effective leadership within the Muslim community, locally, nationally/ internationally.
Administrative and experience within educational settings including alumni/ae relations or related skills preferred.
Capacity to cultivate resources, campus presence, and oversee effective program and promote student leadership development.
Demonstrated capacity to manage facilities and services, e.g. residence and dining.
Appreciation for and demonstrated ability to work with swift-moving; intellectually, racially, culturally and religiously diverse University community including students, faculty, staff and alumni/ae.

Additional Information: Brown University first staffed this Associate Chaplain position in 2004 and was among the first private academic settings to offer a salaried leadership as a full colleague within the multi-faith professional staff of the Office of the Chaplains and Religious Life. This post provides leadership for a highly diverse Muslim community within the Broad diversity of the University community. The Muslim community continues to grow at Brown and is drawn broadly from within the 1% Muslim community of the US as well as from a broad set of international communities as well. The Associate Chaplain aids members of this community to navigate their varied understandings and priorities for Islam and tensions and differences that this navigation may require. The Muslim community is deeply respected at Brown. But its members report experiences within their student and classroom experience that require amelioration of inequity and prejudice. The Associate Chaplain for the Muslim community and colleagues in OCRL are frequently approached to provide regional and national leadership, instruction and representation for important events and projects. It is essential to establish and to maintain carefully the priority of campus opportunities and responsibilities without neglecting important ambassadorial leadership and professional development as this is possible.
